Balance problems and dizziness are very common and can have a major impact on your life. If you are experiencing these problems it is important to let your doctor know so that they can investigate the cause of the problems. For some people balance therapy known as vestibular rehabilitation can help to improve their imbalance and to control their dizziness. Not everyone has access to specialist clinic for in-person consultation to get help. We, therefore, have designed an online program that can make this information easier to obtain. Previous studies in Europe have shown that this promising results in positive outcomes for participants.
Balance Retraining consists of some exercises to help speed recovery from dizziness by giving your balance system practice in adjusting to the new balance signals, at a time and place where you will not be distracted or at risk. The exercises that you will be shown are based on normal head and body movements that you would often make in daily life. They will be completely safe for you unless you have been told you should avoid these particular movements.
This Balance Retraining program is completely online and you do not need to attend a clinic. For this study we are providing this program free of charge. The aim of the program is to aid recovery when the functioning of your balance system has been affected. The program consists of various modules and exercises aimed at improving your problems. It includes some suggestions that help indirectly, such as doing relaxation exercises. In the program, there are audio descriptions and video demonstrations of the exercises, as well as written information to help you clearly understand what to do. You can also ask questions by using the message icon if anything is unclear. For the best results, we encourage you to commit to the program fully and complete the weekly exercises.
This Balance Retraining program is offered at no cost as a part of the research project. This research study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Lamar University (IRB-FY22-41).
